The assessment says India has about 102.18 GWp floating solar potential on feasible inland waterbodies.
Maharashtra has the highest potential at 16.28 GWp, followed by Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Odisha and Telangana.

Floating solar means installing solar panels on reservoirs, lakes or other waterbodies instead of using land.
This is important because large ground-mounted solar projects need huge land, and land acquisition is often slow, costly and conflict-prone.
The news is linked to India’s clean-energy goals such as 500 GW non-fossil capacity by 2030 and net-zero by 2070. India’s solar capacity has already grown sharply in the last decade.
